Charlie’s Bunion in Smoky Mountains
September 18 @ 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
Jeff will lead us on an 8 mile hike (round trip) to Charlie’s Bunion in the Great Smoky Mountains. We will meet at 9 am at the Newfound Gap parking lot on the (US 441 highway) TN/NC state line. The AT crosses at Newfound Gap. The trail passes first through a mixed pine and hardwood forest. As you make your way, you can see Mount LeConte through the trees before you reach the first ridgetop and the junction with the Sweat Heifer Trail, which connects with the Kephart Prong Trail. The AT ascends steeply, providing some spectacular views into NC before it reaches its highest point and descend to the junction with the Boulevard Trail (leads to summit of Mt. LeConte). There are unique sections of unique jagged Anakeesta formations that contrasts sharply with the geology of the surrounding area. After passing the Icewater Shelter, you will descend through a rutted section and at 3.7 miles you will pass out of the red spruce and Fraser fir forest, curve around the shoulder of Mount Kephart and be rewarded by a dramatic view of Charlie’s Bunion. This hike is rated moderate-hard because of terrain and length. Please contact Jeff Chambers if you plan to hike at 731-431-1538 or email@example.com
