Meriwether Lewis Site
July 24, 2021 @ 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Meriwether Lewis Site, Natchez Trace Parkway; We will hike a 6 mile loop moderately difficult trail through the woods. The trail is on natural turf. We will hike beside Swan Creek part of the way and eat lunch at a picnic table next to the creek. There are bathrooms at the trail head and where we eat lunch. Meriwether Lewis, the leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, was traveling to Washington DC on the Natchez Trace. He was staying over night here in a cabin. Two shots were heard during night which killed him. It was concluded that he probably committed suicide. There is a large monument here in his honor. We will drive a short distance after the hike to a swimming hole in the Buffalo River; meet 8:00 AM CDT at Big Lots parking lot on Riverside Drive.≈86 mile to trailhead.
