Promoting the development and enjoyment of Tennessee trails.
Saturday, April 5 — Cumberland Trail: Possum Creek Trail from Heiss Mountain Road to Retro-Hughes Road, near Soddy-Daisy, 9.5 miles, 1940’ el. gain, strenuous. Shuttle required. This is a fine hike through forests, past rock faces, across several gorges, along whitewater creeks and across bridges, along with overlooks, wooden staircases, Stack Rock, and signs of mining operations. The big event is Imodium Falls, a waterfall that can strike fear into the bowels of daring kayakers. Imodium Falls pops up at about the halfway point on our hike, making it an excellent lunch spot.
Check the weather forecast within a day of the hike, as earlier forecasts can change dramatically. Choose appropriate layers; wear hiking shoes or boots; bring snacks and/or lunch along with more water than you think you need; use insect repellent, hiking poles, sunscreen, and rain jacket as needed.
