Promoting the development and enjoyment of Tennessee trails.
Tuesday, September 17 — Raccoon Mountain trails, 4-5 miles, easy/moderate, mostly a loop, not much elevation gain. Just west of Chattanooga, the Raccoon Mountain pumped-storage facility is TVA’s largest hydroelectric facility. In operation since 1978, the plant acts as a large storage battery! (https://www.tva.gov/Energy/Our-Power-System/Hydroelectric/Raccoon-Mountain). Check the hourly weather forecast within a day of the hike, as earlier forecasts can change dramatically. Choose appropriate layers; wear hiking shoes or boots; bring snacks and/or lunch along with more water than you think you need; use insect repellent in season; gather up hiking poles, sunscreen, and rain jacket as needed. For carpooling/ caravanning, meet at 8:30 am EDT at the parking lot just after LaQuinta Inn, right (north) off I-24 Exit 175. https://bit.ly/3QITAD4 Register with hike leader (required for all Scenic City hikes): Dave Graham, at 423 315-7886 or dgraham3611@gmail.com.
