Promoting the development and enjoyment of Tennessee trails.
Tuesday, January 21 — Reflection Riding Nature Center trails, next to Chattanooga, around 4 miles, loop, several hundred feet of elevation gain, moderate. We’ll start out from the main parking lot heading east along the side of Lookout Mountain, then taking a trail that curves east and south behind a few residences. We will pass such spots as “Resurrection Fern Rock.” Then we’ll turn left and head up Nelson Upslope, then right on Light’s Mill Trail. This trail takes us all the way down to the gazebo at the far end of Reflection Riding. It is hard to imagine that Union soldiers swept through this area in November of 1863, on their way to successfully chasing Confederate soldiers off the mountain. Check the weather forecast within a day of the hike, as earlier forecasts can change dramatically. Choose appropriate layers; wear hiking shoes or boots; bring snacks and/or lunch along with more water than you think you need; use insect repellent, hiking poles, sunscreen, and rain jacket as needed. Meet at 8:30 am EST at the Reflection Riding parking lot at 400 Garden Road (the end of the road). Register with the hike leader (required for all Scenic City hikes): Ginny Kidd, (423) 304-3799. Carpool cost: $0.00.
