Tuesday, May 13-Friday, May 16, 2025 – Camping at Standing Indian Campground, Franklin, NC. Hiking the Appalachian Trail and other nearby trails. This gorgeous campground surrounded by mountains is located inside Nantahala National Forest. The Nantahala River flows through the campground. The campground provides access to numerous trails, including the Appalachian Trail. We have reserved a group campsite. We have access to flush toilets and hot showers. There are two options to summit Standing Indian Mountain. #1 Standing Indian Mountain via Kimsey Creek, Appalachian Trail, and Lower Ridge Trail. 11 mile loop, strenuous. Creek crossings, rock scrambles, downed trees, elevation gain 2,428 ft. This hike offers stunning views of the Nantahala National Forest , including the summit of Standing Indian Mountain.. The Standing Indian Mountain Summit offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Kimsey Creek is a scenic creek with multiple crossings along the Kimsey Creek Trail. The Lower Ridge Trail leads to the Standing Indian Summit. We access the Kimsey Creek Trailhead from our campground. #2 Standing Indian Mountain via Deep Gap on the Appalachian Trail. 5 miles out and back, moderate. Elevation gain 1,145 ft. This hike begins at the parking area at Deep Gap, accessible via FR 71. We will follow the AT northbound for about 2.5 miles to breathtaking views at the summit of Standing Indian Mountain.
We will also visit nearby Big Laurel Falls and Mooney Falls and Albert Mountain Fire Tower. Big Laurel Falls is 1.2 miles out and back. Mooney Falls is 0.4 miles out and back. Albert Mountain Fire Tower is 1 mile out and back. On the way home we can stop by Wayah Bald Lookout Tower. It is a 5 minute walk from the parking lot to Wayah Bald Lookout Tower. Chatuge Lake is also on the way home! We can hike the easy 2.8-mile Jackrabbit Mountain Loop. The trailhead is located just outside the Jackrabbit Campground. Highlights include beautiful lake views surrounded by mountains. Jim Barrett is our hike leader.
