Sunday, March 2 – Randy Hedgepath’s Tree ID Hike at Sherwood Forest State Natural Area, near Sewanee. 2.75 mile loop, easy. We will meet Randy Hedgepath, Retired Tennessee State Naturalist, at 1 pm CT at the trailhead. Directions to trailhead: Take exit 134 off I-24 , turn left to Sewanee for 3.1 miles then turn left on Highway 156. Continue 8.5 miles and turn right on Old CCC Road and continue 2 miles to the parking area located at the end of the road. Bring water and a snack. Please register with Joan Hartvigsen, jhartvigs@comcast.net or 931-636-2914. Sherwood Forest has numerous dominant species of trees that include sugar maple, buckeye, tulip popular and basswood. Many of the slopes and spurs are an oak-hickory forest community with white oak prevalent on mid slopes and scarlet, black and chestnut oak occurring on drier upper slopes. We will also walk across a natural bridge and enjoy two overlooks.
