Montgomery Bell State Park Burns, TN 7 miles Moderately strenuous for length.
We’ll hike a combination of the Montgomery Bell, Ore Pit, and Creech Hollow trails, enjoying forest scenery, water features, and history. Then we’ll cool off at the swim beach on Lake Acorn. Bring snacks, water, and a lunch for the trail. Don’t forget sun and bug protection and your swim gear. Register with Mark for updates
Saturday, August 10 – South Cumberland State Park – Buggytop Trail and Natural Bridge. Sewanee. 4.5 miles rated moderate. Joint hike with the Murfreesboro Chapter. We will hike to Lost Cove Cave on the Buggytop trail. This is one of the plateau’s most impressive cave entrances. The mouth of the cave is carved out of a 150-foot cliff. After hiking the Buggytop Trail, we will stop at the Sewanee Natural Bridge State Natural Area to see the largest known natural bridge in the South Cumberland area. Bring snacks and plenty of water. Joint hike with Upper Cumberland Chapter. SHORT HIKE: This is an easy to moderate 5 mile loop which includes a natural bridge, Hazard cave, Indian rockhouse. At Hazard Cave there are signs along the trail that identify the endangered Cumberland Sandwort plant. Take a closer look and you will see parts of the rock carved over time into intricate shapes, and beautifully colored by algae and lichen. LONG HIKE: Short Hike plus the Ladder Trail for 7 moderate miles. Depart 8:00 AM CT from the southeast corner of Cracker Barrel rear parking lot off Interstate 40 Exit 317. Carpool cost is $6.
